Young Carers

Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project is developing a unique provision in South East Northumberland. Partnering up with key agencies and gaining crucial support from Trusts will enable us to offer a fun, active and exciting drop-in and holiday time activities.

Young carers are children, young people and young adults who help look after a member of the family who is disabled, has mental health problems, misuse drugs or alcohol, or elderly or infirm.

At home, day to day responsibilities often include:

  • – providing nursing and personal care
  • – giving emotional support.
  • – cooking
  • – cleaning
  • – shopping

With so many adult responsibilities, young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have to play and learn. They can become isolated, with no relief from the pressures at home, and no chance to enjoy a normal childhood.

What CVYP will do for the young carer groups:

  • – provide opportunities for young carers to take a break from their caring responsibilities, spend time with other young carers and share experiences
  • – provide advice, guidance and emotional support
  • – supporting young carers to use local services such as sports clubs and enjoy physical activities
  • – provide opportunities for young carers to plan fun group activities
  • – provide teambuilding tasks and regular residentials
  • – and much more
