Our Senior young carers who are aged 13 to 18 years old are young people who come to the centre from South East Northumberland. Young carers are young people who look after family members who may be disabled, suffer from mental health problems, misuse drugs and alcohol or elderly or infirm.

The aim of our group is to help our young people gain relief from the pressures at home and gain independence skills which will aid our young people in their home life and as they develop into adults. Some of the activities they may partake in on a week to week basis include:

  • Cooking
  • Pool
  • Physical fitness
  • Music
  • Fundraising projects
  • Other recreational activities…..

The group also work to achieve many of our award schemes such as Duke of Edinburgh and the John Muir Award. The ‘Hair Bear Bunch’ as they chose to be called also take part in holiday schemes where they have a chance to go on trips and residentials. In recent years this has included a 10 day trip to Mimosa in France with PGL.

Some of our group members also volunteer as peer supports during other sessions. Thereby allowing them to grow in confidence and self-esteem as they challenge themselves with new experiences and opportunities
