Gold Residentials

Over the last year we have enjoyed several Gold Duke of Edinburgh residentials at Chirdon Head Expedition Centre in Kielder Forest. This year we hope to enjoy many more. As part of your gold you are required to take part in shared activity in a residential setting for five days and four nights with other young people you have not met before.

Who is this for?

Our Gold D of E residentials are aimed at young people between the ages of 16-25 who have an interest in the outdoors.  As a participant, you will have the opportunity to spend five days in the heart of Kielder forest. Working with new people, who have the same interests as you, this residential is perfect for those who like exploring and/or have an enthusiasm for conservation work.  

Activities available:

With no previous experience required, over the course of the five days you may engage in:

  • Bike Riding
  • Team Building
  • Archery
  • Night Line
  • Conservation 
  • Explore Kielder Forest
  • Orienteering 
  • Navigation
  • Camp Craft
  • Falconry experience
  • First Aid training
  • Cooking 

Nighttime activities will range from night walks, star gazing, quiz nights and recreational activities.  

 Additional accreditation is available through the  John Muir Award and Arts Award during the residential.

Chirdon Head Expedition Centre (CHEC)

Working as a team, all meals will be prepared and cooked together across the week. Breakfast, lunch and tea will be provided with the first day a packed lunch being required. For any dietary requirements, we require prior notice in order to meet them.  Our expedition centre provides bunkhouse style accommodation and will be your home for the duration of your stay.  The best part, you will be able to leave a lasting legacy on the centre.  

What’s included:

  • Transport to and from Chirdon Head Expedition Centre from Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project
  • The use of kit i.e. walking boots, sleeping bags, day bags, waterproofs, bikes and safety equipment
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Tea except for lunch on the first day
  • Training and activities led by licensed professionals 
  • Partnership work with Forestry England, Falconry Days, Wild Life Trust
  • Your E-D of E residential report completed and signed by our D of E leaders
